Which Shall You Choose?

We’ve been talking a lot about the new economy, how consumers are driving a harder bargain and demanding more from existing vendors.   How do you avoid having competitors “on the cloud” leave you “in the dust?”

In the midst of all the confusion and information overload it’s easy to forget that our customers have been loyal because we’ve not only filled their order, but fulfilled our promise for quality, service and solutions that work.

What else are you doing to retain your good clients?   For most companies, lead generation and business development are keys to growth and profitability.  But even more important is keeping the customers you already have and getting them to buy more!

How often and in what ways do you say “thank you”?  What are you doing to find new solutions to the issues your clients face?

Branding has become a significant marketing concept.  But branding is much more than a clever tag line or a 30 second elevator speech.  Branding should say who you are as a company, what you stand for, what you can be counted on to deliver and why someone should develop a long-term business relationship with you.

Take an objective step back and look at your marketing materials, ad campaigns, and website and determine if your message is consistent and if it accurately reflects the company you are today.

Does your branding reflect the vision and values of the organization?  Do your employees know the importance of that branding message in how they interact with your customers?  Your branding promise and your unique selling proposition should be reflected in your day-to-day operation, from the way your receptionist answers the phone and directs the calls to the delivery of the product.

I recently went to purchase a computer from a store which advertises low prices and quality service, only to learn that if I wanted to get their advertised low price, I couldn’t buy it in the store, but had to go home and buy it online.  After some conversation, we determined that I could go online from one of their computers in the store and make my purchase and then walk up to the customer service counter with the receipt and pick up the product…. A good example of running your customer through the ringer before giving them the price you promised!

Now, more than ever before it’s vital to pay attention to every “stakeholder”; not only your shareholders, but everyone who has a “stake” in your business including employees, customers, vendors, and your community.

It’s a good reality check to invite a couple of business people and consumers who don’t currently work with you or your organization to review your marketing materials, ads and websites and tell you what they perceive, and where there are inconsistencies.  Ask some of your current customers to rate their experience with your company against what your branding statement promises.

In Mastering the Rockefeller Habits, author Verne Harnish says, “The brand promise is the key factor that sets you apart from all competitors…it is the starting point from which all other executive decisions are derived.”

Spirituality in Business as Clarity in Business

If there is one thing that almost everyone can agree upon when it comes to spirituality, no matter your religious background or beliefs, it’s that spirituality brings clarity. The words spirituality and purity have long been synonymous. Spirituality can help to alleviate the muddle that comes with stress, and relax our tendency to overcomplicate our environment. When we struggle in life, when we feel lost, it is clarity that we seek. Spirituality provides such clarity in many emotional, relationship, and further normative contexts. Yet spirituality also has the ability to bring clarity into unclear and frustrating business contexts.

The foundation of business is communications. Deals, bargains, and projects are the result of an interaction between people. As this is where all business starts and ends, it only seems natural that clarity should be sought. While the multiple steps that go beyond the initiation of a potential deal are in many cases interwoven with such complexity that few can understand them, the initial steps should always be clear and concise. Within those steps, one should be able to find the motivation of the parties and their goals to be transparent and easily understood. There are deals where this is not the case, but I would state now that such deals are usually instances of one party trying to maximize their gains from the interaction rather than ensuring the best deal for all involved.

Why is this a problem? Well, business is a long term enterprise. The old chestnut of watching who you step on while you are on the way up, because you never know where they’ll be on your way down, is as true today as it has always been. Nothing lasts forever. Therefore, you want to create as supportive a business environment as possible for yourself and your firm at all times. You want to make sure that the continuity of your success is guaranteed through the high potential of help being there when you need it one day. Not to mention the fact that if both firms are trying to maximize their gains with respect to the needs of the other, a better arrangement over time will likely be found – reaping future gains that cannot exist without a continued and trustful partnership.

Thus the best business is always spiritual in the sense that it is clear and honest. It allows parties to minimize the time needed to do their deal, so that both parties can concentrate on other deals as well. It allows parties to develop a stronger network, sensitive to shifts in the marketplace – whether the changes are technological, taste-based, or event driven. There is always a selfish part to business – you can’t just go out of business or take a substantial loss in order to help the other firm. But the existence of this fact, having it out in the open, is as spiritual an act as envisioning the future benefits of treating your partners fairly today. While there are a lot of people out there trying to link business and other parts of the world to our spiritual selves through obscure and abstract theories, this is a very basic way in which good business can be seen as spiritual in nature. Not to mention the fact that business and spirituality are both ways of structuring our search for the unknown conditions that await us aound the corner. Here too, the greater clarity we can retain for ourselves, the better.

That Which Never Goes Away….

The past few weeks have been an exploration of the Visioning Process and how it can be used to serve the continual prospering of your business.  This week we look at how to keep the creative fires burning when you think you have hit a visioning plateau. The primary thing to remember is that what may appear to be a plateau is really an opportunity check in and see where you may be putting the brakes on the process.

Often when I present this idea to organization their immediate reaction is to tell me about how often they are Visioning and how they just keep getting the same thing. Time after time, no matter who is participating in the process these groups think they have stalled when in reality they are that sweet spot of finding “That Which Never Goes Away.”

The Visioning process is all about repetition, and a lot of it.  The nature of the process is that people can, and sometimes do, attempt to influence the outcome. Being humans we have a tendency to want things to go according to our often pre-conceived plan. Visioning has a built in system for preventing this from happening when you use the system as designed.  Now many will ask how a process that is a form of communicating with GOD could possibly be susceptible to human manipulation. That is a great question and the answer is simple. We allow people to record their own visions and tell us what they experienced. We have no way of knowing what they truly experienced and we must therefore trust that they are telling us the truth as they see it. This brings forth another aspect of sharing our vision. As humans we want things to make sense, we have an inner desire to make meaning from our experiences. We will use metaphors, similes, and figures of speech to explain what we think our vision means regarding the Visioning Project. Now this is not to say that people will set out to influence the results, it is just the way the game is played.

This is why the Visioning process must include the Compiling and Sifting portions of the program. Once your team has amassed several sets of Visioning notes they are compiled in such a way as to assure that which notes came from which people is impossible to distinguish. Once this step is complete the team comes together and sifts through this larger document looking for themes, or those aspects of the vision that keep repeating themselves. Those words, phrases, images, songs and so much more “That Which Never Goes Away” are the golden nuggets. These are what we are truly searching for. This is the Universal Truth shining through the human interpretations of the vision. Consider for a moment what you would do if 100 people walked up to you in a day and suggested you do something, or not do something you had been planning.  If one or two people made the suggestion you might not listen, or you might consider it a coincidence and pay little attention to the subject. However, at what point would you begin to think there might be something to the message you just keep hearing. The messages “That Which Never Go Away” are GOD’s words striving to be heard.

The people that feel stuck because they never get anything new are being called to take action on the “What Never Goes Away” aspects of their vision. If you’re feeling stuck, stalled or downright frustrated with the Vision Process because it doesn’t seem to be leading anywhere, or not providing a clear enough message for you to follow I have good news. The answer is to start taking some action. Once you do, I promise new images, words, and alike will begin flowing into the vision once again. In 2006 as I was stuck in the land of “That Which Never Goes Away”, I had been putting off taking action in regards to entering ministerial school. The excuses I was using aren’t important now, what is important is what happened once I said Yes. The day I finally listened to the vision that kept saying go to school and made a couple of phone calls to begin the application process, the vision for my life began to expand again. I believe the Universe wanted to know I was listening. Once I acknowledged, with even the smallest action step, I was once again able to experience a larger more expanded vision of my future.

If you have begun using the Visioning Process in your business and have reached the “That Which Never Goes Away” plateau I highly suggest you get started on something- anything- that is in alignment with those aspects of the vision “That Which Never Goes Away”. I promise that you can revitalize the vision for your organization or your life immediately by moving in the direction of the vision itself. Once you take the first step you will be amazed at how quickly the Universe begins to conspire for your good.

SO…….When do I get to “DO” something????

Yes the New Year is now well underway. I am sure you have been inundated with questions about your resolutions, your goals and your plans for the coming 12 months. Just last week we asked you if you were ready to hold the vision of your future. We provided resources for you to explore how to hold your vision. Our hope is simply that you will be inspired to accept a different perspective of how to jump start the next great evolutionary leap of your business. At The Inspired Business Center we speak quite a bit about creating a vision for your business by using the Visioning process.  Recently we have been asked quite a lot what comes after you catch the vision and hold the vision.

What Now?

Today we are going to share a few tactics for moving forward once you have gotten to that point of knowing it is time to “DO” something, anything in order to move forward with your desires, hopes and dreams for your business. Today we look at when to take action and how to know what action to take. Today we give you something to “DO” when your brain is screaming, “NOW WHAT!!!!”

The very nature of the Visioning Process is that we are catching a glimpse of a higher calling, a higher perspective for our business than we ever could have come up with by ourselves. As we come to engage ourselves with the emerging vision we will experience some insights that do not seem to align with what we already know about our business or are simply so far out in left field that we question the validity of the information. This is not uncommon; in fact it is to be expected. There will always be anomalies within the process. Because of this we have to have a system for determining what information is valuable and which information is the background chatter, the white noise that does not serve the evolution or manifestation of the highest vision for your business.

How then do we know what to hold onto and what to let go of? The answer is actually much simpler than you might suspect.  Look for those words, phrases, feelings, images, feelings, sounds and or impressions that NEVER go away. When you look at the outcome of numerous Visioning Sessions there will be things that consistently, without fail, show themselves.

The things that never go away are the things to pay attention to. An example I often use is what occurred during my visioning prior to enrolling in the Masters of Consciousness Studies program at the Holmes Institute. Regardless of what I was Visioning about I would receive “Go to school” in one form or another. This simple phrase would show up in the most wondrous places, and ways. However the phrase would not go away. I could not sit in the silence, pray, meditate or practice Visioning without hearing, seeing or feeling that phrase. It honestly became a little frustrating. Once I eventually submitted my application for the degree program things shifted. That phrase stopped coming through my spiritual practices.

Once I made the commitment to attend school Spirit began showing me different aspects of the highest vision for my life and career. As I prepare to graduate with a Masters in Consciousness Studies I have other impressions that will not go away. This is how I know I should pay attention to those aspects of my Vision. What then are the ideas, insights and impressions that continually pop up for you? What things simply “NEVER GO AWAY”? These are the things I would consider the basis of the next step in DOING something to manifest your vision.

Now that you have a few things that you can call the base of your action steps and feel like it truly is time to move you will have to ask yourself what action would best serve bringing your vision into manifestation. Once again we look to he collected wisdom of the entire Visioning process.

I do want to add a reminder here about the continual nature of the Visioning Process. Visioning for your business never ends. Even once you move to taking action on one aspect or another the process can continue to inform your strategies. As you continually use the process you will begin to amass a collection of notes, insights and other forms of recording the vision itself.

Once you have completed a few different sessions compile the impression for each question individually. I like to copy and paste the impression from each person’s vision into one master document. This master document becomes an incredibly valuable tool when you begin to take action and make decisions about what action to take. The master document becomes a road map, which can guide you from nothing to something.

Now when you are at the point of deciding what to do, when to do it, and what resources to use in order to accomplish your chosen action steps simply hold up the Master Document and ask if the decision you are about to make will move your organization towards the fulfillment of that vision. If so go right ahead and get started. However if the decision does not serve to fulfill the vision I suggest you reconsider your decision.

You now have a way of determining if it is time to take action and how to determine if the action you have chosen will actually lead to the manifestation of your vision. As you move forward in the direction of your dreams for your life and your business, the Visioning process will always serve you in becoming clear on what it is you are to accomplish, when to begin taking action and how to know the decision you make will serve to manifest your vision.

You can look forward to strategies that will get more people on board with your vision and get them engaged in the manifestation of the vision.

The Solstice of Your Business Year

Star of David at SunriseDecember 21st is the day of the winter solstice the shortest day of sunshine for the Northern Hemisphere.  It’s natural then, for each of us to turn within and shine our inner light more brightly.  A time for stillness and reflection.  Eckhart Tolle, author of The New Earth says “To be still is to be conscious without thought.  You are never more essentially, more deeply yourself than when you are still.”

In that personal stillness we can think back on the year.  It’s been a time of significant change for most of us, a time of what I call values-based choices.

In some instances they’ve been tough decisions based on lower revenues…having to let go of employees who have contributed their time and talents to us, or  being “let go” by some of our customers who were also feeling the crunch.

What have you learned from all this?  What did you discover about what’s truly important to you?  What do you know you want to do differently moving forward?

What did you release that actually lightened your mental or physical load and freed your soul?

In many cases the tough choices have created gaps that need to be filled back in. Maybe there are positions or functions you learned you could live without and other posts that are critical to rehire so you to meet the customer orders that are beginning to increase.

What relationships with family, friends, business associates, or volunteer causes did you put on hold because you were “too busy” that now need to be re-established and re-connected?

What commitments to yourself and others did you sweep under the rug till you had more time?  Is that still something you need or want to fulfill or can some of those items be handled by someone else or not done at all?  Decide and Act.  If you plan to honor a commitment first quarter, get it in your calendar.   If you can’t get it done, let the other party know you can’t do it, and, if possible, help them find another resource.  One way or the other, get those commitments off your mental list of “oughts” and “shoulds” and free up your energy and focus.

Joel Goldsmith wrote “Within us is a deep well of contentment, a vast, all-embracing silence into which we relax and through which all good appears to us.”

The important thing is to be complete and clear as you move into the Holiday Celebrations with family and friends so you can be fully mentally and emotionally “present”.   It’s the greatest gift you can give them!

Are you an Overnight Success?

There is no “magic formula” for the life and business of a spiritual entrepreneur. The truth is, the entrepreneurial journey is often complex, confusing and yet infinitely exciting as well. The Inspired Business Center thrives on serving business owners, entrepreneurs, managers and leaders as they navigate the choppy seas, and glass like waters of their unique expression of life and business. During the previous several weeks we have explored one perspective of building a spiritually based business and leading that business as a spiritual entrepreneur. We hope you are now walking a little taller, a whole lot stronger are excited about utilizing the power behind the 4 Pillars of Spiritual Entrepreneurship.

Our collective adventure has led us from the foundational thoughts to the pinnacle expressions of building, operating, and enjoying a spiritual business. Throughout this series we have explored the Beliefs and Character that drive you to create something unique, something special, something only you can bring to the planet. We continued to look at how our Vision and Adaptability influence the forms our business takes and how that business can serve both you and your stakeholders. We explored how Passion and Skills support our business in the creative aspects of enterprise building. You also learned how our Faith and Focus serve to keep you on track and moving forward to lead your spiritual business.

Last week we looked at how these eight unique attributes combine to create the four corner pillars of a spiritual business. (This is not to say that there are not other supporting pillars). However these 4 Pillars serve as the primary aspects of spiritual entrepreneurship. The time has come for you to fully integrate these attributes and begin, to integrate them into every aspect of your business, company and organizational culture.

We fully understand that this is not an overnight job. It is however an inside job. I am sure you have heard the story of the overnight success. Someone appears from nowhere and suddenly become a sensation that changes the face of an industry, genre or culture. The myth of the overnight success must end today. We also all know that those “overnight successes” are actually built on years and sometime decides of dedication, courage and unyielding commitment to a dream. We also know that many of these stories are built on the backs of people that learned everything they know the hard way. These folks often scrapped their way up from the streets, lived in their cars, overcame their addictions and built something from what appeared to be nothing. Our question for you is simple; would you rather be an overnight success after decades of hard work and struggle or follow your unique calling in order to have all the success you desire in the right time with the right resources what we call the slow burn success model. Now please understand the slow burn model does not require you sit in a stew pot for the next decade. It requires you to “Slow down in order to move faster.” Business success requires a huge amount of outer work, building system, lining up joint ventures, negotiating with suppliers, vendors and so many other wonderful tasks. Instead of making all this effort and struggle and clawing your way to the top, the “Slow Burn” model simply requires you to BE who you are and DO what comes your way. This is the golden chest that resides below the roof we have just placed on top of The 4 Pillars.

You may be wondering how all this relates to your business. We understand this and honestly want you to sit and contemplate your business for the remainder of this year. Once we move into 2011 The Inspired Business Center will be launching a 10 week 5 part tele-seminar based on the 4 Pillars of Spiritual Entrepreneurship. You can register for this series HERE. During this series we intend to go deeper, much deeper into the aspects of each pillar and how to put each pillar to work in your business. We intend to provide a “Slow Burn” approach to developing a spiritual based organization, and/or business. Our intent is to provide you with an incredibly content and process rich experience that will challenge you to be the best you can possibly be and even more. In order to dot his, however, we must know you are ready for a “Slow Burn” and not looking for an “Overnight Success.” Therefore in December Rev. Marla Riegel will be presenting a 3 part blog series based on the new book by Tom Zender God Goes to Work. Pillar # 3 Passion and Skills

As we continue our exploration of the 4 Pillars of Spiritual Entrepreneurship we have come to pillar number three: Passion and Skills.  Our intent is that by now you can see how each pillar is built upon a strong foundation, in this case passion, and eventually reaches a higher expression, in this case skills. The pinnacle must be supported by the foundational aspect.  Passion and Skills work together in a number of ways. It is often much like the old which came first, the chicken or the egg question. During the past twenty plus years of working with small independent business owners I have found their entrepreneurial spirit is most likely to be an expression of their passion. These people may have a passion for cooking, or woodworking, or being their own boss, or building businesses. Regardless of how they express their passion they found the passion prior to developing their skills.

The passion is the fuel that fires our engines. It is that spirit within us that makes getting out of bed a pleasure rather than a chore. Now some of you may be thinking I am totally full of it right now. You own your own business and it feels like an albatross that keeps you in bed. It may feel like you are trapped within a venture or company that is a living hell and worse it is of your own making. Sure you had a ton of fun building and launching the company, but now years later you may feel as if you have lost your passion or that which you once loved is now a day to day grind. I would suggest that you have not really lost your passion but rather have gotten lost in a maze of requirements, objectives, and tasks that you simply have not developed the skills to accomplish.

At The Inspired Business Center we work with leaders who’ve spent many years developing the skills necessary to launch and initially operate their business. Many of them report to us that they had little idea of all the various tasks they would be called upon to fulfill as their company grew and expanded. They had the passion and the skills when they started but as new tasks became requirements they set about to learn things they had little or no passion for. It is a highly skilled and trained professional that has a passion for payroll, accounting, and many other aspects of operating a business. This is not to say that accountants and other professionals are not passionate about what they do. On the contrary I know of many highly skilled passionate accountants that have no passion around marketing their business. I know many amazing chef’s that have no time, or inclination to learn all the human resource regulations necessary to run a successful restaurant. Our advice is often the same; focus on your passion, what you love, what brings you joy, what you do best, and hire the rest.

Hiring passionate professionals with the necessary skills, which often require extensive training or education, and allowing yourself to follow your passion for cooking, building, creating, writing, leading or accounting is a sure path to success. It’s like the airline safety warning, put your own oxygen on first before you help others. Only here you serve yourself by sharing and expressing your passion for your business and serve the business by allowing others to serve you in those areas that drag you down, wear you out, and cause you to question why you are in this business to begin with.

As a business owner it is your position to lead by example; to express passion for life, your service or product line; and the reason you started this company in the first place. Our challenge to you today is to tap into the original passion that was the tipping point in your decision to launch your company. When you build from a position of passion and focus upon only the skills you possess or can easily develop you support others by allowing them to bring their gifts to your company. Hiring passionate professionals and utilizing their highly developed skills support the new paradigm of a collaborative economy.

As you build the pillars that support you and your business you will find numerous opportunities to expand your skill set. If you hear an inner calling to learn something new, develop a new or different skill or even gain more up to date education around a skill you already use, by all means do so. However if the thought of learning how to manage your payroll, your marketing, your social media, your training or anything other task feels like a drag on your time or energy then find someone with the passion for such things and form a collaborative, co-operative or co-creative relationship and allow them to serve you by expressing their talents and gifts.

It has often been said that together everyone achieves more. I imagine that is not the first time you have heard that and yet this simple statement is very true. Using the 4 Pillars of Spiritual Entrepreneurship is all about working smarter rather than harder and when we allow our passion to determine which skills we develop life and our business becomes a work of art rather than an albatross of frustration, suffering or drudgery.

A Character of Belief

Last week we shared an overview of the 4 Pillars of Spiritual Entrepreneurship. As we explore each of the 4 pillars during the coming month it may help you to visualize each pillar as having a base which sits upon a foundation and a pinnacle upon which the roof of the structure rests.

Today we will explore the base of the first pillar: Belief and Character two distinct yet complimentary principles. Beliefs are the base building blocks of your life; they form the basis of your outlook and serve in establishing your internal map of reality. Although you might adjust your operations because of current events or other factors beyond your control your beliefs will always serve to shape your character.

How many times have you heard that the success of a restaurant relies on three aspects; location, location, location? This is a common belief system within the restaurant industry and beyond. However I have worked with restaurant owners that have done quite well in spite of what many would consider a poor location. If you ask them about this belief they will tell you it has nothing to do with their success. These successful restaurant owners chose not to believe that their location could adversely impact their business.

In today’s business climate you may hear many things from the media; we are in a recession, we are in a recovery, or we are looking at a double dip recession. Who should you believe? Regardless of which scenario you choose you will begin to, align your business and your operations with the belief you feel is most likely to come true, or is already a reality. The deeper truth is that we contribute our business’ experience of recovery, recession, success or failure based upon the beliefs we opt in to.

Hopefully we aren’t telling you anything you don’t already know. Yet how many of your employees know this simply truth? Do they choose to opt into limiting beliefs without your awareness? Are your manager, suppliers and collaborators subtly, not intentionally, sabotaging your business when they buy into the limiting beliefs.

All these beliefs lead to the development of our character. Simply stated your character is what distinguishes you from others. The question quickly becomes “Do you wish to be known as someone that follows the crowd or someone that blazes their own path”? I often teach that a visionary is one that makes their own way in the world without looking back to see if anyone is following them. How often have you heard people describe someone as a visionary? Your character is the out-picturing, the manifestation of your beliefs. Character serves to shape how others perceive you and whether they will follow you in business, honor your opinions, or even purchase your products or services.

Character serves as the pinnacle of this pillar as it is the higher expression of your foundational beliefs or worldview.  It is your character that supports the ceiling of whatever structure you own, operate or manage.

Building a solid and strong business requires not only the 4 pillars of spiritual entrepreneurship but a bedrock foundation as well. This foundation is your form of spiritually, religious or personal faith tradition.  Regardless of what label you place upon this aspect of your life the truth remains that you have been building your foundation from a very young age. The joy in this is that you can add to, strengthen and support your foundation through various means. At the Inspired Business Center we do not push any one faith tradition, but rather suggest you strengthen your own involvement with whatever form of spirituality suits you. We know a solid spiritual practice will strengthen your business as well. The beliefs taught and modeled in your place of worship can be an amazing example of how your beliefs create your reality and thus your character and support your business in turn.
