Pillar #4 Faith and Focus

Today we explore the fourth and final pillar of our series. The pillar of Faith and Focus completes the four corners of our structure and is in my opinion the most import pillar for the spiritual entrepreneur. What is faith and how do we use it? It has been said that Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Thus, Faith is in some ways walking from the visible to the invisible. In business we have faith that our products or services will sell. We have faith that someone will not open a shop much like ours on the opposite corner. We have faith that people will spend their money. We have a visible product and we walk into the invisible world of sales and marketing.

Faith takes on many different forms within our company. Our employees must have faith their job will exist tomorrow. Our vendors have faith we will pay our bills on time. Our customers have faith we will continue to provide them with the goods and services they desire. Most importantly we, as owner, executives, and managers must have faith in the economy, local and/or federal governments and the quality of our products. Each of these aspects requires a slightly different form or style of faith.

Ultimately having Faith means we are willing to look beyond the worldly, materialistic view of our life, our business our world, and see something different. We are being called to see the world as we wish it to be rather than what we believe it to be in this moment. How often have you heard someone say, “I’ll believe it when I see it.” That statement is the exact opposite of Faith. Faith is knowing that, “When I believe it I will see it.” In today’s economy we are being asked to believe in the recovery in order to see or experience that recovery. If we wait until we see the recovery to believe it is happening we will continue to wallow our way through what appears to be a recession.

This brings us to the aspect of Focus. Our Focus must be on that which we desire to experience as the truth of our life, business, company, or organization. Another wonderful saying is, “What we think about is what we bring about.” If your focus is on how terrible the recession is you will get to experience a terrible recession.

Let’s look at an old business paradigm of the target market. Often as business owners we are told to focus on our target market. While this was once a wonderful concept I believe it represents an old paradigm of business thinking. As Spiritual Entrepreneurs we are being called to support the expansion of a new paradigm. This new paradigm is one in which all transactions are treated as a spiritual experience, regardless of the players definition of spirituality. Take a look at the target market concept from the consumers’ perspective. Would you rather be someone’s target or their ideal customer? No one wants to walk around with a target on their back; however we do want to be someone’s ideal customer. I believe that if I am your ideal customer you will treat me as a valued asset. Would you rather gets used up and thrown away or be an ideal form of support and growth for a company?

Taking a spiritual approach to business serves to reframe every aspect of our perspective, perception and thus experiences. The pillar of Faith and Focus help to complete that reframing of our minds that open our business to an entirely new avenue of attracting customers, fans, supporters, and financiers. At the Inspired Business Center we are teaching business owners, executives and managers how to bring spirituality in to play in their companies and organizations through Faith and Focus.

Hopefully you now have an understanding of the 4 Pillars and how they can serve as the corners stones of a spiritually based business. During the next three weeks we will explore the practical applications and share how these concepts work in conjunction to support your company or organization.

Pillar # 3 Passion and Skills

As we continue our exploration of the 4 Pillars of Spiritual Entrepreneurship we have come to pillar number three: Passion and Skills.  Our intent is that by now you can see how each pillar is built upon a strong foundation, in this case passion, and eventually reaches a higher expression, in this case skills. The pinnacle must be supported by the foundational aspect.  Passion and Skills work together in a number of ways. It is often much like the old which came first, the chicken or the egg question. During the past twenty plus years of working with small independent business owners I have found their entrepreneurial spirit is most likely to be an expression of their passion. These people may have a passion for cooking, or woodworking, or being their own boss, or building businesses. Regardless of how they express their passion they found the passion prior to developing their skills.

The passion is the fuel that fires our engines. It is that spirit within us that makes getting out of bed a pleasure rather than a chore. Now some of you may be thinking I am totally full of it right now. You own your own business and it feels like an albatross that keeps you in bed. It may feel like you are trapped within a venture or company that is a living hell and worse it is of your own making. Sure you had a ton of fun building and launching the company, but now years later you may feel as if you have lost your passion or that which you once loved is now a day to day grind. I would suggest that you have not really lost your passion but rather have gotten lost in a maze of requirements, objectives, and tasks that you simply have not developed the skills to accomplish.

At The Inspired Business Center we work with leaders who’ve spent many years developing the skills necessary to launch and initially operate their business. Many of them report to us that they had little idea of all the various tasks they would be called upon to fulfill as their company grew and expanded. They had the passion and the skills when they started but as new tasks became requirements they set about to learn things they had little or no passion for. It is a highly skilled and trained professional that has a passion for payroll, accounting, and many other aspects of operating a business. This is not to say that accountants and other professionals are not passionate about what they do. On the contrary I know of many highly skilled passionate accountants that have no passion around marketing their business. I know many amazing chef’s that have no time, or inclination to learn all the human resource regulations necessary to run a successful restaurant. Our advice is often the same; focus on your passion, what you love, what brings you joy, what you do best, and hire the rest.

Hiring passionate professionals with the necessary skills, which often require extensive training or education, and allowing yourself to follow your passion for cooking, building, creating, writing, leading or accounting is a sure path to success. It’s like the airline safety warning, put your own oxygen on first before you help others. Only here you serve yourself by sharing and expressing your passion for your business and serve the business by allowing others to serve you in those areas that drag you down, wear you out, and cause you to question why you are in this business to begin with.

As a business owner it is your position to lead by example; to express passion for life, your service or product line; and the reason you started this company in the first place. Our challenge to you today is to tap into the original passion that was the tipping point in your decision to launch your company. When you build from a position of passion and focus upon only the skills you possess or can easily develop you support others by allowing them to bring their gifts to your company. Hiring passionate professionals and utilizing their highly developed skills support the new paradigm of a collaborative economy.

As you build the pillars that support you and your business you will find numerous opportunities to expand your skill set. If you hear an inner calling to learn something new, develop a new or different skill or even gain more up to date education around a skill you already use, by all means do so. However if the thought of learning how to manage your payroll, your marketing, your social media, your training or anything other task feels like a drag on your time or energy then find someone with the passion for such things and form a collaborative, co-operative or co-creative relationship and allow them to serve you by expressing their talents and gifts.

It has often been said that together everyone achieves more. I imagine that is not the first time you have heard that and yet this simple statement is very true. Using the 4 Pillars of Spiritual Entrepreneurship is all about working smarter rather than harder and when we allow our passion to determine which skills we develop life and our business becomes a work of art rather than an albatross of frustration, suffering or drudgery.

Pillar #2 Vision and Adaptability

In our last post we looked at how our Beliefs influence and support our Character, as well as how these two aspects of life are the first pillar of spiritual entrepreneurship. This week we turn our focus upon the pillar of Vision and Adaptability. More often than not the business world hears the word vision and immediately jumps to the concept of vision and mission statements. While these aspects of your business are incredibly important and the process we teach will help to create vision and mission statements, we look at vision in a different light. (which is what? – need a sentence here)

Just over 9 years ago I was introduced to the Visioning Process which was developed by Michael Bernard Beckwith of the Agape International Spiritual Center. The process involves entering into a silent, inner conversation with your Higher Power. During the conversation you are able to catch a vision of something greater than you may have ever known for your life and your business. As I approach a decade of practicing the Visioning Process I have been witness to incredible insight, amazing leaps in consciousness and increased material wealth by the individuals and business owners using the process. As a business owner you are being provided with an amazing opportunity to take an “insider’s look” at the future of your business and how that future can benefit both you and humanity.

Using Visioning as a tool can serve your business in both the short and long terms. Many businesses made adjustments to their operations in the past two years, and many of those adjustments did little if anything to advance the company in the direction of their vision. The companies that remained true to their vision, however, are better positioned than ever before to quickly rebound as we enter what we believe to be a “full steam ahead” recovery. Those that reacted to the economic currents are now asking “how do we re-align ourselves with our original vision and mission?” Regardless of the action your business took in the past couple of years now is the time to reclaim and re-energize your vision of your business. At The Inspired Business Center we work with companies of all sizes in re-claiming, re-shaping or simply creating their vision by teaching and facilitating the Visioning Process for Businesses.

The process however is not a one time deal. Once a vision is realized the Visioning Process will inform you of the next greater possibility for your company. It’s here that we reach the pinnacle of the second pillar. Adaptability is incredibly important as the vision evolves and your business grows, and becomes more profitable. Adaptability is not a “do whatever it takes” mentality. Adaptability is process of checking in with the vision and discerning which steps, re-organizations, or changes in operation will move the company closer to the fulfillment of the vision in the current environmental conditions. This is not the time to throw things against the wall and see what sticks. Adaptability is the willingness to consider a different perspective to a situation other than what’s always been done before or what all the experts say you should do in a specific situation.

The Visioning Process is a never-ending affair. Once you begin you could stop at any time, but honestly, I don’t see why you would ever want to. Visioning gives you more to look at, and possibilities to explore. As you begin to implement the vision you’re presented with the opportunity to adapt your business or organization to meet a Higher Power’s perspective of how your company can serve you and humanity at the same time. Adaptability speaks to the opportunity to create something more than your imagination or ideas ever could. I find it refreshing to know that while my business remains mine to lead the vision itself is calling me forward. If I can remain adaptable to the situations of life and the economy as they occur, the vision itself will always be there showing me something I may not have considered. This unique perspective can only come through Visioning and will never let us down. The vision itself continually evolves and shapes itself into the highest and best possibility for the company.

The question becomes if you are willing to allow the Highest Vision of your company to serve you in building a company that is adaptable to the ever shifting world around you? If you allow the vision to guide you I believe you will find more good times in your business regardless of what the rest of the world is doing. You will be positioned to take advantage of the next great economic opportunity rather than being forced to sit on the side lines and wait it out.

A Character of Belief

Last week we shared an overview of the 4 Pillars of Spiritual Entrepreneurship. As we explore each of the 4 pillars during the coming month it may help you to visualize each pillar as having a base which sits upon a foundation and a pinnacle upon which the roof of the structure rests.

Today we will explore the base of the first pillar: Belief and Character two distinct yet complimentary principles. Beliefs are the base building blocks of your life; they form the basis of your outlook and serve in establishing your internal map of reality. Although you might adjust your operations because of current events or other factors beyond your control your beliefs will always serve to shape your character.

How many times have you heard that the success of a restaurant relies on three aspects; location, location, location? This is a common belief system within the restaurant industry and beyond. However I have worked with restaurant owners that have done quite well in spite of what many would consider a poor location. If you ask them about this belief they will tell you it has nothing to do with their success. These successful restaurant owners chose not to believe that their location could adversely impact their business.

In today’s business climate you may hear many things from the media; we are in a recession, we are in a recovery, or we are looking at a double dip recession. Who should you believe? Regardless of which scenario you choose you will begin to, align your business and your operations with the belief you feel is most likely to come true, or is already a reality. The deeper truth is that we contribute our business’ experience of recovery, recession, success or failure based upon the beliefs we opt in to.

Hopefully we aren’t telling you anything you don’t already know. Yet how many of your employees know this simply truth? Do they choose to opt into limiting beliefs without your awareness? Are your manager, suppliers and collaborators subtly, not intentionally, sabotaging your business when they buy into the limiting beliefs.

All these beliefs lead to the development of our character. Simply stated your character is what distinguishes you from others. The question quickly becomes “Do you wish to be known as someone that follows the crowd or someone that blazes their own path”? I often teach that a visionary is one that makes their own way in the world without looking back to see if anyone is following them. How often have you heard people describe someone as a visionary? Your character is the out-picturing, the manifestation of your beliefs. Character serves to shape how others perceive you and whether they will follow you in business, honor your opinions, or even purchase your products or services.

Character serves as the pinnacle of this pillar as it is the higher expression of your foundational beliefs or worldview.  It is your character that supports the ceiling of whatever structure you own, operate or manage.

Building a solid and strong business requires not only the 4 pillars of spiritual entrepreneurship but a bedrock foundation as well. This foundation is your form of spiritually, religious or personal faith tradition.  Regardless of what label you place upon this aspect of your life the truth remains that you have been building your foundation from a very young age. The joy in this is that you can add to, strengthen and support your foundation through various means. At the Inspired Business Center we do not push any one faith tradition, but rather suggest you strengthen your own involvement with whatever form of spirituality suits you. We know a solid spiritual practice will strengthen your business as well. The beliefs taught and modeled in your place of worship can be an amazing example of how your beliefs create your reality and thus your character and support your business in turn.
